What is a Bearing Distance Indicator (BDI)?

A Bearing Distance Indicator (BDI) is a navigation instrument used in aircraft to determine the bearing and distance to a desired location. It provides pilots with critical information for navigation, allowing them to accurately plot their course and reach their destination. The BDI combines two primary functions: the bearing indicator and the distance indicator.

The Bearing Indicator

The bearing indicator on a BDI displays the direction of the desired location relative to the aircraft's current position. It is typically represented by a rotating compass rose, similar to a traditional magnetic compass. The compass rose contains markings indicating the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west) as well as the intermediate points. As the aircraft changes its heading, the bearing indicator rotates accordingly, allowing the pilot to continually monitor the direction to the desired location.

Additionally, the bearing indicator may include a course deviation indicator (CDI) or a needle that indicates the deviation from the desired track. The Distance Indicator

The distance indicator on a BDI provides the pilot with information about the distance to the desired location. The distance indicator may be represented by a numerical display or a series of markers on a scale, similar to a ruler. As the aircraft approaches the destination, the distance indicator decreases, providing a visual indication of progress towards the desired location.

Some BDIs also incorporate a countdown timer, which enables pilots to set a predetermined distance and track their progress towards reaching that point. This feature is particularly useful during instrument approaches, where precise timing and distance management are critical for a safe landing.
